Hello Mastodon, an #introduction.
I'm a geospatial scientist with a PhD in Earth System and Geoinformation Science. I work in remote sensing and #GeoAI, mostly on drought, vegetation, and land — in Africa and the US Great Plains.
I'll mostly post maps, model results, and #GoogleEarthEngine and Python tutorials (#geopandas, #rasterio). I'm also building a national GIS data portal for #Cameroon.

Indominus rex (Jurassic World Science Gone Wrong, Captivz Surprise Egg by ToyMonster)
Over on the Dinosaur Toy Blog I’ve written 22 reviews of ToyMonster’s Captivz figurines, miniature Jurassic World toys that come in blind bag eggs, accompanied by a trading card or token and slime, kinetic sand, or some other tactile material. I like these figures a lot, they’re typically very well made and reasonably priced. You can check out the various Captivz figures I’ve reviewed […]

They’re inspired by Mexican botellones—small clay water jugs with an accompanying cup which serves as a cover. Sometimes the cup has a handle. I’ve also discovered a Congolese version of the botellón. It’s such a simple and effective idea that it’s no surprise it would appear in multiple cultures. #pottery #ceramics #beautility
The negative self-talk isn't random.
It has a source.
Sometimes it's what your parents said, so many times it became your own voice.
Sometimes it's what society said about people like you.
Sometimes it's you, breaking one of your own rules.
Before you try to fight it, figure out where it came from.
You can't fight with something you haven't named.
You can't move on before you recognise your own voice.
Happy Canada Day!
The Indigenous flag was designed by artist Curtis Wilson (d 2019).

I’m happy to announce the release of a new open source 3D physics engine called Box3D. I’ve been working on this project for a few years now, but it represents over 20 years of experience writing physics engines for games. Read more here: https://box2d.org/posts/2026/06/announcing-box3d/

Well, I just got let go from my job after 2.5years so it’s time to find the next thing.
I have almost 30 years experience with #PHP and for many years was one of the community’s loudest voices about testing and code quality.
I like helping teams turn business requirements into working software and refactor applications and modernize them to conform to patterns and practices that lead to better outcomes.
I am looking for 100% remote roles where I can use my PHP (with a bit of Python ) skills to help your project get better.
I am in the North American Eastern time zone and have dealt with jobs where folks were both in EU time zones and North American Pacific time zone.
I am eligible to work in Canada and I also have a consulting business so non-Canadian companies could use me.
This is a fun finding. I need to update my biosketch for someone. I tried to login to scienv yesterday. It prompts my login.gov. I put my username and password in. Instead of the security key screen, I next get a screen saying security check failed. No matter what.
Know what I found fixes it? Turning off my ad blocker. Why does my ad blocker need to be turned off for logging into a federal website???
UPDATE: Y'all have donated enough to pay for Charlene's care. Any donations made in excess of the final bill will be refunded. Thank you, again. 🙏 ❤️
:charlene_cat_head: What's going on with #CharleneTheCat?
Charlene has been not herself and just nibbled on food for a couple days—something's wrong. This Spring, she had a GI infection that began with the same symptoms.
This morning, I took her to the vet, but they wouldn't diagnose or treat her without a large down-payment on the estimated bill.
A very kind FediFriend donated the down payment, and Charlene will go to the vet in the morning.
Vet's total estimate for diagnosis and treatment is between $485 (covered by a FediFriend's donation) and $920.
If you can and would like to donate to Charlene's care, please see the Ko-fi link on my profile. Those funds go directly to my Paypal account, and any donations over the actual cost will refunded.
Please DM if you'd like to see a copy of the vet's estimate.
Thanks, y'all. 💜
Dear quilting/library community, please enjoy this bookshelf quilt made as a fundraiser for the new library (in Belleville ONT). The books are all named after local people and organizations.
PhD in Cell Biology
I am a Research Scientist and lab manager for the Tootle lab in the Biology department at the University of Iowa. We use Drosophila oogenesis to understand the mechanisms regulating prostaglandin production and function. My particular interest is the developmental roles of lipid droplets and their connection to prostaglandins.
I love biology and teaching people about what is happening in cells. I also am really interested in microscopy.
I also like cats, horses and horseback riding, fish keeping (I have two aquariums), video games-particularly the Half-Life franchise and Half Life mods, and I have recently gotten into VR (NOT META!) so if you want to chat about any of these topics that would be great!
