No. No. NO! Journalists MUST do better when reporting on America's gun violence crisis.

Continuing to state "The family also said the gun allegedly used was secured before the shooting" as CNN did here (cnn.com/2023/01/25/us/newport-) re: the Newport News elementary school shooting is INACCURATE AND MISLEADING with the info that IS NOW AVAILABLE.

According to an earlier CNN report: "Gun allegedly used by 6-year-old to shoot teacher kept on top shelf of mother’s closet, attorney says."

@Laurie_Snyder @MaRY1Fem It seems kind of obvious, if a six year old has your gun at school it wasn’t “secured”.

Agreed, @Gbudd. One thing many parents of small kids (and the aunts, uncles and neighbors who babysit them, as well as their teachers) learn is that a surprising number of small kids have the ability to climb/reach places adults think they can't get to.

But this mom thought that her gun was secured because the shelf she placed it on was so high her child couldn't reach it. He did. She also thought a trigger lock on the gun would stop her child. But it didn't. He defeated it.

Scary and sad.
