The Painted Hills, John Day Fossil Beds National Monument, OR. The day we went there, the light was bad and muddy, but suddenly, sunlight, and I got this picture.

Other people go to the beach or places to play for vacation. I tend to go to places that are geologically interesting or scenic for other reasons or have good history/prehistory connections.

@knittingknots I've been there! It's fascinating. There's a museum somewhere around there where we watched a scientist working on some tiny fossil. It was amazing, they had a camera in the microscope so we could see what the scientist could see.I'd love to go back and wander around there some more, but the folks I travel with all prefer the beach.

@Hortense The right beach can be nice...I like to go to the area between Newport OR and Florence OR. Some sandy beaches, some rocky shore, museums, visitor centers, shopping, neat landscape...

@knittingknots I just spent some time recently with my sister at Brookings. We tried to visit every beach north and south of there within a day's drive. So lovely. I miss the beach sometimes. It's a 4-hour drive from here to get to the Oregon coast. I'm closer to the John Day wilderness.
