This “Climate-Friendly” Fuel Comes With an Astronomical Cancer Risk
--

The EPA recently gave a Chevron refinery the green light to create fuel from discarded plastics as part of a “climate-friendly” initiative to boost alternatives to petroleum.

But, according to agency records obtained by ProPublica and The Guardian, the production of one of the fuels could emit air pollution that is so toxic, 1 out of 4 people exposed to it over a lifetime could get cancer.

What happens if teens get their news from TikTok? | Letter theguardian.com/media/2023/feb

It is bad, but it also assumes teens get news from anywhere at all. I regularly come across young folks with no clue about the world around them.

I am in America this week. I can report that there is no shortage of lettuce, tomatoes, peppers or any other vegetable. Indeed, they also have some very nice oranges available at the store I visited. Britain didn't just shoot itself in the foot with Brexit, it blew both feet off with a howitzer. #politics #fbpe #ukpol #ukpolitics

Sen. Wyden: "Banning TikTok would be a godsend for sleazy rip-off data brokers. TikTok is one piece of the puzzle, but don’t miss the overall challenge—because until you reign in these data brokers … you’re going to have all kinds of people’s personal data in America still on its way to China and hostile powers"

Twitter appears to have stopped publishing transparency reports showing what takedown demands governments have issued and, importantly, which demands Twitter honored. This is a bad development for free speech and transparency — especially after the recent censorship demands India has been granted on Twitter. rollingstone.com/politics/poli

Why are so many people seeing more engagement on Mastodon than Twitter?

To me, the answer is pretty simple: Twitter tries to aggregate as much attention as possible around stuff that goes mega-viral.

There are only so many minutes in the day. So for stuff to "blow up big" necessitates that most of the rest of the posts from people we might actually want to hear from must go unseen.

Yeah, but the broad picture needs to be made clear, Republicans oppose regulations and don't want corporations to be held responsible for the harm they cause.

It's funny, no not actually, that Biden can go fly over to Europe to help save democracy from a brutal dictator that waged an inhumane escalation of his war crimes and even through in a twenty hour train trip through the war zone for the first time since Lincoln went to a battle in Maryland yet still Americans can apparently seriously accuse him of not doing enough during his administration.

No wonder we can't have anything good here in the USA.
