Dipping a toe with my first “real” post. This story is from July, but I thought it might be of interest to folks who don’t normally follow math news or who might want to see the war in Ukraine from another perspective. I traveled to Switzerland to report and photograph this profile of Maryna Viazovska, who this year became the second woman to win a Fields Medal in the award’s 86-year history. quantamagazine.org/ukrainian-m

It's such a simple thing but it's so very beautiful, when moons and other planetary bodies come together. And the camera team lead by @carolynporco for Cassini were absolute masters at catching these events.

Hello Mastodon.

I am looking for new PhD students to come work with me at the Oxford Internet Institute in 22/23 (@oiioxford) to study the future of data privacy and digital rights, the impact of AI and algorithms on digital platforms, and help co-create better digital futures.

Boosts very much appreciated! 🐘

Something that I hope to spend more time on now that I've wrapped up my PhD is astrophotography.

This photo of the Milky Way was captured over the dark skies of the Ozarks in August 2020. Designated as an International Dark Sky Site, the glow of light pollution is still visible on the horizon, in this case the light dome from Little Rock and surrounding areas.

This photo is a stacked and tracked 30-image composite taken over 30 minutes.

🚨 BIG EXOPLANET NEWS! 🚨

Our team has released FIVE papers today on the most COMPREHENSIVE study of an #exoplanet atmosphere to date!

Using #JWST we obtained four transit observations of #WASP-39b early in the telescope's operations to study both the planet itself, and the telescope's capabilities to observe exoplanet atmospheres.

We detected numerous molecules in the planet's atmosphere, including CO2, CO, H2O, and SO2 🧵

The future is here! ⭐ 🪐 🔭 #Astrodon #Science

This is the 14 command module 'Kitty Hawk'. It flew Roosa, Sheppard and Mitchell to the moon and back in January and February 1971. Fun fact: The astronauts were in Germany for their training in August 1970. In the Nördlinger Ries impact crater in southern Germany, they encountered geological conditions somewhat similar to those at the landing site in the Fra Mauro region. The ABCs of #climate change by the journalist who put the Sixth Extinction on the map: "Climate change isn’t a problem that can be solved by summoning the “will.” It isn’t a problem that can be “fixed” or “conquered,” though these words are often used. It isn’t going to have a happy ending, or a win-win ending, or, on a human timescale, any ending at all. Whatever we might want to believe about our future, there are limits, and we are up against them." @elizkolbert newyorker.com/magazine/2022/11

In reality, we're not mere passengers on the blue marble but crew members who can determine the future of Earth.

Hello Mastodon! This is an #introduction. I’m a writer (book: Spare Parts, which is a history of transplant surgery from the sixteenth century to the present day (yes, they did transplants back then!) Published by Penguin in the UK and Australia, and St Martin’s in North America. Before this, I was a film maker. Actually, I still am, working mostly with museums, universities and healthcare institutions. I’m so excited to learn about and connect with you all!

It’s good to see engagement and use growing here. It would be healthy to have a social platform free of the billionaire oligopoly and the corporate ad folks, don’t you think?
