Do me & Mastodon a favor by following (and boosting) @CalMatters . They haven't posted here since Jan. There's a bot that imports their tweets, but it would be better for all of us if we could show CalMatters the value of investing in the Fediverse.
CalMatters does better coverage of CA politics and higher ed than any LA news org I know of, including - in my opinion - the LA Times.
There is deep consternation that Jack Smith needs to hurry up with just about 18 months left before we elect a new President.
Just as there were idiots groaning that Garland is taking too long and allowing Trump to get away.
Here's the thing: Neither Garland nor Jack Smith has any pressure to re-elect a Democrat.
That is OUR job. They are doing theirs. Want to see Trump convicted, without rushing things?
Elect a Democrat to the WH in 2024.
@staidwinnow @grammargirl I think I'm glad this term didn't survive! It would be too much for the "All intensive purposes" crowd.
(Also, I hear it in my mind and I immediately think of "nincompoop.")
But it works for non-overlapping magisteria. (Underlapping? If it's "non-over" doesn't that make it "under"? 🤣)
Every gov in the world is now using "foreign backed environmentalists" to describe the poorest of the poor people protesting against having their water supplies poisoned.
Canada's RW loves the term. Modi uses it to describe anti mining activists. I'm pretty sure Trump employed the term. It's getting tiring how they are spinning destruction of vital life systems as some kind of noble calling as if greed is noble.
If you're looking for a villain to blame for this smoke, it's us driving pointlessly large cars, subsidizing fossil fuel extraction, and building houses so large we need two routers to wifi in the whole place. The villain is us, not some camper who may or may not have been careless with a campfire. Even if there was a camper, it's climate change that created the conditions for this kind of burn. This was well predicted since at least the 90s so don't even pretend we didn't know.
We are the bad guys of this story. If we want to fix this, we have to take power away from the .001% and honestly, even if we put it in the hands of the 1%, we would have better outcomes.

I've been organizing my #music playlists and started noticing many songs that mention #california in title or lyrics. (Tom Petty has quite a few.)
I looked around online and found several hundred songs that fall into this category! I didn't try to compare w/other states but I suspect CA may have one of the highest mention rates.
Anyway, here's a favorite.
Wilco - California Stars (Live at Farm Aid, 1998)
@staidwinnow It's important to keep saying this. People are finding their way through cultural changes and I'll cut them a little slack but...
Last week my comment, "Look at the trees! Drink!" was deleted in a Christian-atheist debate chat.
The moderator thought it was likely a joke...BUT I could have been promoting alcohol and drug use.
Lol. Or maybe I was promoting magnetized water.
@staidwinnow Sometimes when trying to decide a difficult issue I think about extreme endpoints. In this case the Jan. 6 assault on the capital could be examined.
If all those people had stayed home and tweeted or Facebooked or Truth Socialed or whatever, things would have looked a lot different that day. And some people would still be alive.
Words incited the mob, but if they'd responded with words, there'd have been no violence.
@staidwinnow Thanks, I didn't know a lot about Boghossian. I've been reading his book on difficult conversations.
I enjoyed seeing students engaged in this sort of discussion. Many of the younger people that I work with seem well-informed and able to identify at least some issues with logic. This gives me hope.
I noticed Boghossian doing a lot of SE videos at universities, so I'd been wondering if university students were his free speech "cause". Will proceed with caution.

Is speech violence? Here's a very interesting discussion from 2022 (~20 min) with Peter Boghossian and a group of university students.
😩 When you have a really bad night with a migraine and take a PTO day from work...then feel guilty about resting, so you do laundry and clean your house 🧺 🧹

I wish people would be more concerned about how they live their lives especially in regard as to how they treat others and be less concerned about how others live theirs, and in fact just leave them alone.
This is definitely a better way to handle the extremists, however.

Regardless of what gets announced today, thank you to the many thousands of Apple employees who are making it happen behind the scenes. Just because you don't see them, or know all their names, still remember they are people when you are firing off your hot takes.
(this post aimed towards myself)
I'm stunned by this. Is US right wing madness infecting the whole world?

"On June 1, India cut a slew of foundational topics from tenth grade textbooks, including the periodic table of elements, Darwin's theory of evolution, the Pythagorean theorem, sources of energy, sustainable management of natural resources and contribution of agriculture to the national economy, among others.
...
Even as thousands of scientists across the country protested the decision to slash evolution last month, it did not deter India’s National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) — the public body that designs curriculum and textbooks — from expanding its list of omitted topics."
