What you're really seeing is that Wikipedia has significantly more women-focused WikiProjects than men-focused ones.[1]
For each "Wikipedia:WikiProject *", you'll find a "Category:Top-importance * articles", "Category:High-importance * articles", "Category:Medium-importance * articles", and "Category:Low-importance * articles".[2]
In the case of "Category:Low-importance women writers articles", WikiProject Women writers has assessed that an article in the category is "not very significant within the general study of women writers or literature".[3]
Meanwhile, there is no WikiProject Men writers, so it should be unsurprising that there is also no "Category:Low-importance men writers articles".

Note, however, that those women-focused WikiProjects are largely a response to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gender_bias_on_Wikipedia , so your suspicions weren't that far off.
