I read somewhere that feeding wild birds, particularly blue-tits (some of the most frequent visors to our feeding station), when they have young; i.e. around now, actually significantly reduces the percentage of chicks that survive to adulthood. Seed and fat-balls are allegedly not suitable feed for chicks who need to be fed on food like caterpillars and other 'soft' insect foods.

We stop feeding about this time of year and only restart when the breeding season is over.
