Wilber Urbina Garcia, 18, wanted to be a doctor. His family fled Nicaragua in late 2022, citing political persecution. They entered asylum proceedings, received work permits, and kept every appointment. Their check-ins had gone from twice a year to monthly.

At the June 10 check-in, agents detained him. He had just turned 18, and an agent claimed he no longer counted under his mother's asylum case. His attorney says that is incorrect, since a derivative filed before age 21 stays tied to the parent's claim.

He is now at the Adelanto ICE Processing Center. As he was led away, he asked his brother to pick up his diploma and to tell his college he could not attend. Enforcement keeps moving toward people who follow every rule. I wrote about how that machinery grew:
