A few friends of mine in Zagreb are gathering for a beer 1700-1900 at Beertija, Ul. Pavla Hatza 16, 10000, Zagreb

Come by and chat about railways in this region over a beer!

It’s also POURING with rain today in Zagreb

Good job I don’t have any major bike routes today!

There will not be a live stream from #CrossBorderRail but the presentation will be filmed and uploaded later. Bureaucracy has prevented me getting on the wifi here at the faculty 😭

Borna Abramovic from
Uni Zagreb talking about Agatha Christie. I’m going to the station where the murder happened on Sunday 🙂 #CrossBorderRail

Zagreb

This fat BMW has parked so badly trams can’t pass. Trams are backed up. The car will get towed! 🙂 #CrossBorderRail

So will the old truck with the crane be strong enough to lift the hefty BMW? 🙂 And importantly how high will the fine be for the driver? #CrossBorderRail

EN 40414

Average speed: 62km/h

5 stops:

Ljubljana

This train, mapped: umap.openstreetmap.fr/en/map/c

So this is the main reason why Zagreb to Ljubljana is so slow… the locomotive mess at the border

The next toots will explain it

1) Croatia is 25kV 50Hz ac

So we start from Zagreb with a HŽPP 1142 that can run only under 25kV

2) At Dobova the border station, the overhead wires change from 25kV ac to 3kV dc

But our train is too long for the 25kV section, so stops in the 3kV section

It runs the last few metres pantograph down without power, then gets dragged away by another locomotive

3) The 1142 locomotive having been towed away then gets a push back to the 25kV section on another line

4) Then the ÖBB tri voltage (3kV dc / 15kV ac / 25kV ac) locomotive is connected…

@jon
THat is a serious amount of faffing around. For what??

Follow

@Island_Martha @jon the funniest thing is that Zagreb is some 30 km from the border...

@Island_Martha @ProfT oh the line is quite straight! It’s just dysfunctional in terms of operations! 🙂
