Since #reddit killed third-party apps (RIP RIF) I drastically reduced my usage of the page.

It is 22/7 ≈ π approximation day! Reminder it is also the last day for MEGA Grant applications. It’s a simple process; if you have a ridiculous public maths project please do get it in the mix. talkingmathsinpublic.uk/mega-g

Cortex #144: Absurd Temperature Management

Grey has had to vacate his garage office, Myke wants to thank Cortexans, Cortex joins the Notion Nation, and Myke has hired a personal assistant. Also, a lightning round of exciting Beta features.

@TechConnectify teasing out the difference between correlation and causation is critical if you actually want to take action about something like this.

In case you missed it, all links on Mastodon count as 23 characters towards your limit, no matter how many characters the link really is.

So, you don't need to use link shorteners on Mastodon as they won't actually affect the link's length.

Mastodon does this because it's better for everyone's privacy to avoid link shortener services, it means people can see what they're clicking on, and the link won't stop working if the shortener service shuts down.

I ended up reading some posts on reddit yesterday. (I'm not posting there, and trying actively to avoid it.)

I forgot how many ads you see there! It made me appreciate kbin even more, and I signed up to support kbin with monthly donations.

Hopefully it's just a matter of time before we fill up kbin (and lemmy?) instances with knowledge that currently exists on reddit.

✨ Sneak Peek of Sign-in with Mastodon

We're almost ready to ship this ground breaking feature which vastly improves our onboarding experience for Mastodon users!

It will be shipping later today after I (@dansup) get some sleep, sorry it's a bit late, this is a complex feature.

Last month, the #Fediverse was at 1,646,492 MAUs.

The last time it was this high was in December 2022, which had 1,823,896.

June was the 3rd highest month on record regarding MAUs for the Fediverse. And it was largely due to the #RedditMigration, which caused the #Lemmy and #Kbin to grow by nearly 350,000 new accounts.

I’m going to miss #Reddit. Does anyone know if there’s a list of #lemmy instances / alternate sites Reddit communities are migrating to? I’ve seen a handful posted individually, but wondering if there’s a list or spreadsheet or something floating around. 🤔

@HellaButts So long as users are on the platform, Reddit can make the rules. They are the judge, jury, and executioner. Every protest is a losing battle. The only way to win the war is for everyone to leave the platform.

I just received the following notice from #Reddit regarding r/Passwords.

Ironically, our community voted to keep the sub private just last weekend. I am doing explicitly what the community wants.

⚠️ PSA for sleeping #Reddit users. The whole service will likely implode after July 1st. You still have 10 days left to save your posts and comments.

There is a handy tool, which dumps users posts and comments to a psqlite database, which can then be read by using a local datasette and a browser. Works great.

An update on Redditanic's sinking and Steve Huffman’s megalomania:

Large subs are being nuked of their mods. r/mildlyinteresting had their whole mod team suspended and removed. r/TIHI and r/interestingasfuck show up as unmoderated (and therefore open to scabs to apply to become mods).

At least two of these have had polls and overwhelming user support for the protests.

In The Good Place lingo: Steve Huffman is a giant forking bench who takes cork up the ash for pennies.

#RedditBlackout

#reddit banned all moderators from r/TIHI and suspended their accounts - NSFW labeling would scare members. Moderators responded with DMCA takedown notice: kbin.social/m/RedditMigration/

"My long-term vision for RedReader is to restructure the app to more easily support other sites, including Lemmy" -RedReader

RedReader is a Reddit app with over 100k downloads on the Google Play store

"I think it would be cool to work with some kind of "open forum protocol" which would allow a variety of websites and apps to interoperate with each other through a uniform API."

Been using #Lemmy for the past week or so and have honestly been really happy with it so far! I haven't really touched #Reddit since and I also haven't really missed it. Always great to see services in the #Fediverse becoming more and more popular :-)

Multiple subreddit moderator teams have already been replaced by Reddit corporate. This message was sent to /r/watchpeopledieinside from Reddit admins. If subreddit mods don’t comply they will find people who will.
