"Go to an old cemetery. See all the baby graves from before the 1950s & 60s? After that, hardly any. That's when people started vaccinating their children against deadly childhood diseases. If you're unsure what to do to protect your kids, the answer is literally written in stone." — Michael Okuda
How quick we forget.
An Electric Arc Furnace (#EAF) in #Algoma, #Canada, begins producing steel without #CO2 emissions from #FossilFuels.
“Algoma's $880-million transition to electric arc furnace steelmaking has been the most costly building project in the city since building permits were issued.
“It will replace the blast furnace technology and coke ovens used to produce Sault steel for the past 124 years.
“The company expects its new Volta steel will reduce its #CarbonFootprint by up to 70 percent and help fuel growth of a low-carbon #economy.”

Toistaiseksi parasta täällä Brändö Bike and Bedissä on ollut kirjahyllystä löytynyt Nordisk Världsatlas, huikean upea kartastokirja vuodelta 1926. #kartat #kirjat #kirjamastodon #kirjamasto

Sopuli is down for some reason, and logging in with SSH is really slow. Maybe something's wrong on Hetzner's end?
Today Melissa Lewis over on BlueSky pointed out that the font used nin the infamous "You wouldn't steal a car" anti-piracy campaign was actually designed by Just van Rossum, whose brother, Guido, created the Python programming language (bsky.app/profile/melissa.news/post/3ln7hx5rhcj2v)
She also pointed out that the font had been cloned and released illegally for free under the name "XBAND Rough". Naturally, it would be hilarious if the anti-piracy campaign actually turned out to have used this pirated font, so I went sleuthing and quickly found a PDF from the campaign site with the font embedded (web.archive.org/web/20051223202935/http://www.piracyisacrime.com:80/press/pdfs/150605_8PP_brochure.pdf).
So I chucked it into FontForge and yep, turns out the campaign used a pirated font the entire time!
I’ve come to understand that my ability to play Noughts and Crosses is a highly technical skill difficult to replicate, or Noughts and Crosses is a mystical force that no one really understands, or something else to make it make sense why you would put this nonsense, implausible game on your advert.
(To be clear: it can’t be that one of the corner Noughts won the winning line because if so, the other diagonal would have already won. So it must be that the centre was placed last. Then at least the previous move Cross could have won and the one before Nought could have won. Perhaps it’s miseré (play to lose) Noughts and Crosses and Nought just lost?)
Sperm whales have two nostrils, but unlike most animals, they are asymmetrically positioned. The left nostril is visible on the outside and forms the single blowhole used for breathing. The right nostril is hidden inside the whale’s massive head and is actually part of its complex echolocation system.
Thanks for sharing, The Guernsey Scientist !
