We've been on X/Twitter for many years, but it's time to reduce our activity there and instead promote Mastodon as our main social media channel now. So we've done just that: https://x.com/LibreOffice/status/2026204949760131158 – Welcome to all our new followers here 😊
what if your messenger didn't care what protocol your friends use?
sup bridges activitypub, xmpp, irc, atproto and more into one clean app. pixelfed, mastodon, loops - every one.
modular by design. hackable by default.
open source + agpl + self-hostable
the ethical messenger that shouldn't exist but soon will. 🔥
follow @supapp for updates and early access
I started planning a new app for Pixelfed/Loops/Sup admins.
It's really complex to try and add admin support to the main apps, due to oauth scopes (users don't need to be more confused), and the fact they aren't designed for that.
Having a separate admin app would allow them to manage multiple instances, get push notifications and keep the main apps lighter.
Likely won't be ready until Q4, I have a few other things to finish first 🤠
The ActivityPub Laravel package that I started writing for Loops has become quite complex and will take another few weeks to finish.
So I'm putting that aside for now, and directly implementing AP in the loops-server project, so we can get Loops federating ASAP.
It wasn't a waste of time though, I'm reusing a lot of the code, and plan to ship that package when I have more time.
Loops v1.0.0-alpha.2 is now available 🥳

"Go to an old cemetery. See all the baby graves from before the 1950s & 60s? After that, hardly any. That's when people started vaccinating their children against deadly childhood diseases. If you're unsure what to do to protect your kids, the answer is literally written in stone." — Michael Okuda
How quick we forget.
An Electric Arc Furnace (#EAF) in #Algoma, #Canada, begins producing steel without #CO2 emissions from #FossilFuels.
“Algoma's $880-million transition to electric arc furnace steelmaking has been the most costly building project in the city since building permits were issued.
“It will replace the blast furnace technology and coke ovens used to produce Sault steel for the past 124 years.
“The company expects its new Volta steel will reduce its #CarbonFootprint by up to 70 percent and help fuel growth of a low-carbon #economy.”

Toistaiseksi parasta täällä Brändö Bike and Bedissä on ollut kirjahyllystä löytynyt Nordisk Världsatlas, huikean upea kartastokirja vuodelta 1926. #kartat #kirjat #kirjamastodon #kirjamasto
The Loops alpha release is nearly ready, just take a look at this demo.

Sopuli is down for some reason, and logging in with SSH is really slow. Maybe something's wrong on Hetzner's end?
Today Melissa Lewis over on BlueSky pointed out that the font used nin the infamous "You wouldn't steal a car" anti-piracy campaign was actually designed by Just van Rossum, whose brother, Guido, created the Python programming language (bsky.app/profile/melissa.news/post/3ln7hx5rhcj2v)
She also pointed out that the font had been cloned and released illegally for free under the name "XBAND Rough". Naturally, it would be hilarious if the anti-piracy campaign actually turned out to have used this pirated font, so I went sleuthing and quickly found a PDF from the campaign site with the font embedded (web.archive.org/web/20051223202935/http://www.piracyisacrime.com:80/press/pdfs/150605_8PP_brochure.pdf).
So I chucked it into FontForge and yep, turns out the campaign used a pirated font the entire time!
I’m interested in science and technology. Free and open source software are important to me.
