i was going to shitpost about how we need timezone reform in the form of a return to local solar time, but then i went down a wikipedia rabbithole for some background and now i just have a non-shitpost about how this entire entry is fascinating:

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Solar_ti

"Since sometime in the late 20th century, Earth's rotation has been defined relative to an ensemble of extra-galactic radio sources and then converted to mean solar time by an adopted ratio."

this is like that whole digression in tolkien about the respective calendars of the hobbits and the dwarves and the ancient númenóreans and who the fuck ever.

or maybe like the experience of reading that coreutils info page about date input formats with the quote from _time and the art of living_

i think i'm fascinated by dates and timekeeping mechanisms because i'm too terrible at arithmetic and number systems to remotely grasp any of it.

i can't even deal with the temporal math involved in a fucking daylight savings time switch.

which brings me to my original point: time change reform! this fiat currency of timekeeping that we all suffer with has no relationship to natural values. bring back local apparent solar time!
