Stem cell transplants play a key role in the treatment of blood cancers

But unfortunately four of every 10 UK patients looking for an unrelated donor are unable to find a match

Why not consider joining the British stem cell register to become British stem cell donor? Joining is as simple as taking a cheek cell swab. Join here: dkms.org.uk/get-involved/becom

More on stamping out bad science

The United Nations recognises that misinformation is dangerous and puts people's well-being at risk, and is asking influencers and others sharing info to pause before they share.

HOW TO SHARE RESPONSIBLY

The Royal College of Emergency Medicine, a doctors’ association, has estimated that delays in accident-and-emergency departments are leading to 300-500 additional deaths per week. Officials at NHS England do not accept this figure econ.st/3GXp3zk

A rough guide to spotting bad science

From compoundchem.com/

Being able to evaluate the evidence behind a scientific claim is important. Being able to recognise bad science reporting, or faults in scientific studies, is equally important. These 12 points (in the attached poster) will help you separate the science from the pseudoscience

Stands to reason you should not rely on a press release but go back to the original source of the data if at all possible.

Breast cancer recurrence / metastasis and alcohol

Women who have had a diagnosis of breast cancer (particularly those who have had oestrogen-positive breast cancer) are advised to stick to no more than 5 units of alcohol a week by the World Cancer Research Fund.

Note: 1 glass of wine (175 ml) is about 2.3 units. So that is only 2 glasses of wine a week. Yikes!

Assessment of the quality of meta-analyses

Because meta-analyses are increasingly prevalent and cited in the medical literature, it is important that tools are available to assess their methodological quality.

For clinical trials, a check to see if the analyses follow the QUORUM (Quality of Reporting of Meta-analyses) guidelines is advised.
thelancet.com/journals/lancet/

A short-hand approach found that 4 key areas are important to the quality of meta-analyses:
- data sources
- analysis of individual studies
- meta-analysis methods
- interpretation

In-flight emergency for patient with syncope on plane home tonight from vacation. Used cuff to check BP, but no pulse oximeter in kit!

Stethoscope not great so I put my @Apple watch on the patient to check rate & rhythm. Very useful ❤️

I can’t stop thinking about the Afghan girls Robotic team knows as Afghan Dreamers. The girls with minimal resources were able to design and build low cost ventilators and their expertise were used during Covid crisis. Roya, a member of Afghan dreamers was ranked among Time’s 100 most influential people for her work in building internet classrooms in Afghan high schools.

Literature reviews using free apps

I'm sure medical writers know not to use Google Scholar as their only search in a literature review. Always use a database such as PubMed. I would not use .
