The landscape of biomedical research

@emollick on the bird app has posted a link to an interactive 'map' of biomedical research.

Each dot is one of 21 million papers, based on connections between their abstracts identified by AI. Scroll for the tour, which is both beautiful & shows the method's ability to answer important questions about science. static.nomic.ai/pubmed.html

You can scroll the narration in the left part of the screen, and interact with the visualization in the right part of the screen. Zooming in loads additional papers. Information about each individual paper appears on mouse-over, and clicking on a paper opens its PubMed page in a separate window. Search over titles is available in the upper-right corner.

Today is Citizen Science Day!

Today celebrates the great contributions to scientific knowledge have been made by people who were not professionally dedicated to the world of science.

Background: The mandate at the World Federation of Science Journalists is to support, promote and advance science journalism across the world.

Science journalism has real, practical and measurable value. Good science journalism informs and enables people to make life-saving and life-altering decisions, whether that’s to have a vaccination or to vote for a party that offers a workable energy plan. The importance of our role of translating science and applied science for large audiences has been starkly illustrated in the past few years.

WFSJ encourages membership in every part of the world, especially countries in what is known as the Global south.

Is the tide turning on predatory academic publishers?

Web of Science have just removed the MDPI flagship journal IJERPH from their lists. This means IJERPH has no more an Impact Factor.

This is significant because IJERPH is one of the largest open-access mega-journals in the world

~50 other journals are also affected.
