Some people had mistakenly thought that Mastodon’s local timelines were obsolete. Now that we’ve seen the limits on how high you can scale a single instance, it’s obvious that the future of the fediverse is a large number of small communities talking to each other, not a small handful of giant single points of failure.

Keep Mastodon weird. Get to know your neighbors, and help build your local community.

@tek I only joined earlier this year, but the local timeline is so appealing to me. I came of age in the late 80s/early 90s when BBSes we're at their peak. To me, the local timeline is just like dialing into a local BBS and then you have the federated timeline that is something like Fidonet.

Right now I'm on a private instance because I wanted to play and I just haven't found one that feels like home.

@josh I was there, too, and I like that analogy a lot.

@tek @josh I tell my kids if the glory days of BBS. Just last week I played the dial up modem noise for one who is a teenager. The sound of hope back in the days of the BBS.

I've been on the fediverse for a few years and I experienced the same when I joined.

@SecondJon @josh We ran an Enigma BBS here a couple of years ago. It was a huge blast of nostalgia. It also reminded me of why I instantly fell in love with the Internet the moment I got access to it.
