I recently learned that German company Telefunken arguably invented the computer mouse. They offered a “Rollkugelsteuerung” (“rolling ball control”) for one of their mainframes in 1968, months before Douglas Engelbart’s “mother of all demos”. Telefunken’s mouse was also more advanced than Engelbart’s mouse as it used a ball instead of two wheels. (Photo credit:

Here is an interesting take on why the current situation with the bird site may, actually, be an opportunity for academia to reclaim ownership of its social media presence: blogs.lse.ac.uk/impactofsocial

Universities, scientific societies, labs, etc., can (should?) use Mastodon's distributed architecture (or similar) to set up social networks that are not controlled by a single privately-owned company. This would somehow preserve our social capital against the market's mood swings.

No instance for United Nations agencies and staff members? Maybe the good time to embrace the ?

EU apparently has already its own instance: social.network.europa.eu/about

Twitter might be going down. @beatty is trying to preserve the Science Twitter Graph.

Go to opencheck.is/scitwitter, provide your Twitter handle and your @ORCID_Org ID - that's it!

Just for fun, I visualized the network: leonlotter.de/twittergraph/gra
When I ran the code a few minutes ago, we had already around 600 nodes and 5000 edges in the network!

Long time collaborators and friends are slowly migrating to Mastodon, so glad to see them!

With patience, step by step, we all will rebuild our network. Since our social relationships make the network, not the other way around.
