First Privet Hawk-moth of the year, Sphinx ligustri, in our garden last night. The largest of the British moths, can be up to 120mm wingspan.

Some years I've seen several on the same evening along with a variety of the other Hawk-moths. But, 2024 is not proving a very good year for any of the moths here, so far :-(

@sciencebase I always think 'Hello Moth' because of the Russian привет.

@sciencebase Checked with a pal and it seems that the word for butterfly and moth is the same in Russian. мотылек.

@SteelFolk Yes, I think that's the thing with some other languages.

German has Motte, but also Falter and Nachtfalter for butterfly and moth

@sciencebase Or Hochofen when you're used to BF meaning blast furnace.
