„It’s estimated that in 2023 the heat content in the upper two thousand metres of the oceans increased by at least nine zettajoules. For comparison’s sake, the world’s annual energy consumption amounts to about 0.6 zettajoules.“

Electronic advertising is a climate crime that makes our public spaces more hostile

The giant screen at Euston Station boasts of saving energy, while using more electricity than the average street, just to serve us adverts we didn't consent to see

Have a look at our simulation of the air-sea #CO2 flux and surface wind speed in a high-resolution #EarthSystemModel model ICON 👇

I find September particularly fascinating in this animation. A hurricane in the Western Atlantic entirely messes up the CO2 flux. Here, the immediate effect is that the hurricane enhances the outgassing of CO2. Behind it, the flux swaps the sign and there is uptake of CO2.

Why Speaker was wrong not to call Diane Abbott to speak at PMQs

Why she should have been allowed to speak for herself in an exceptional circumstance

And how the Speaker's excuse for not doing so fails to convince

"It is almost as if the world is telling us a morbid joke: we will kill you if you resist and kill you if you hide, and if you refuse, and if you concede, and we will devour your land and gulp your oceans and kill you with hunger and thirst.

The massacres will be televised, broadcast in broad daylight."

Well, in case anyone was starting to think that Biden had any sort of empathy for the Palestinians, the answer is: NO. The shameful temporary port is for helping Israel to get rid of UNRWA, having more control over Gaza, and absolving Israel from the accusation of starving people.

That's all so sickening.

@freemo The problem is that it becomes more important to prevent mis-use than to make it work for its purpose. Since there are always folks smart enough to freeload, everyone is treated as guilty of the intent. This deters legitimate claimants.

@freemo There are some who believe it should be a deterrent and so designed against 'scroungers'. Sometimes this is said openly in the UK.

@freemo Yes, most of them feature a desire to make them punitive. We moved on from 'debtors prison' and workhouses, but only just. There remains a view that folk will work harder to avoid an unpleasant system but they never have.

@freemo It is too easy to mess it up and there are pitfalls too. The UK 'universal credit' is an example.

@freemo I've never seen any argument for folk not working when getting UBI, but that it sits under incomes as a financial safety net for most cases. Some cases may need more money or other forms of welfare but UBI would catch most cases.

@freemo I think they can get guns by asking a judge, tbf.

@freemo If you carry one here, cops come very quickly. Of course, they haven't got one, so they are at a disadvantage. They can have a stick, though.
