"Paradigm Shift: inflation, financial shocks and political crises signal fundamental change."

My latest Coppola Comment post includes links to the full text of my speech at Morningstar Investment Conference and to the shorter version in The Mint magazine.

"The present paradigm emerged from the twin horrors of World War II and the Great Depression of the 1930s. Now, as these events fade from living memory, the consensus that has maintained it for over 70 years is breaking, and the shadows of the past are returning."

My piece at The Mint on why the resurgence of #inflation , financial crises and wars signals that a paradigm shift is under way. Where are we going, and what will be the cost?

This is uncharted territory unfolding for humans on this planet, not just in a projection of a climate model.

“The world just had the hottest week on record, according to preliminary data,” the WMO said, adding that temperatures were breaking records on land and in the oceans, with “potentially devastating impacts on ecosystems and the environment”.

So... the eruption at #Fagradalsfjall 🌋 (#Reykjanes, #Iceland) has started, and I have put together some live #webcams of the area.
If you know any other that is relevant, please let me know here or on my blog.

I've worked in this area for the past two decades. Everyone's sharing this scary-looking sea surface temperature (SST) map but SST on the Florida Shelf aligns with what we expect in a warming world.

What's scary is our continued use of fossil fuels.

A reasonable rule of thumb in UK #politcs is that if the Tax Payers Alliance doesn't like something, then it would likely benefit society;

to hear that they are against the four day #working week, leads me to think that the shadowy (corporate?) funders of the TPA are unhappy that #workers might be able to spend a little more time thinking about the inequities of the current system & a little less time being ground down by the world of #work.

My girlfriend has been selected to present a #poster at an international #conference in #astronomy, but does not have the #funding to go. She's inbetween masters and PhD, so neither institute can provide funding. Does anyone know if there are #travelgrants for a #woman #IndependentResearcher in #astronomy from #india ?

Rishi Sunak told MP’s his illegal Migration Bill was LEGAL. Now a Joint Committee on Human Rights has published a damning verdict finding, as lawyers have been saying all along, it BREACHES A NUMBER OF THE UK’S INTERNATIONAL LEGAL OBLIGATIONS!

Why is UK media not all over it?

Alright well since I’m catching up here, here’s the big newsflash for me right now:

The business I founded and run, Academic Audio Transcription Ltd, which exists to create accessible fairly paid transcription and captioning work for disabled, chronically ill and neurodivergent freelancers, needs your help.

To survive the summer and into 2024, we really need to secure some sizeable projects.

Call for #PhDpositions in #ClimateResearch - please repost

The International Max Planck Research School on Earth System Modelling (IMPRS-ESM) opens a call for doctoral candidates in climate research:

mpimet.mpg.de/en/career/imprs-

Within this year’s call, I am looking to fill two PhD positions in my group at Uni. Hamburg / Helmholtz Zentrum Hereon / Max Planck Institute for Meteorology focusing on the ocean carbon cycle modeling in the Earth system.

Application deadline is 15 Sep.

Tuesday was the world's hottest day ever recorded with a global temperature of 17.18°C (62.9°F) - NWS

Earth just experienced the hottest global day on record. Records for near-surface air temperatures around the world broke all previous averages on July 3 and again on July 4, 2023. #climate #elnino newscientist.com/article/23810

Study finds birds raise fewer young when spring arrives earlier in a warming world:

Rising global temperatures are making it harder for birds to know when it's spring and time to breed according to a new study published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Day 1 of #eve4climate is done.

The first session had talks by
Bjorn Stevens, Debra Roberts, Aromar Revi and Tim Palmer.

They were all addressing the possibilities of the Earth Virtual Engines (EVE), an amibitious project to develop several global centres of excellence in climate science supported by exascale compute and analysis facilities.

The basic thesis is that if we push toward global models with 1-km resolution we will be able to provide much better global predictions of climate

@davidallengreen with his tongue firmly placed in his cheek suggests what #RishiSunak really needs to help him make #government actually works is a committee of all the major departmental heads that meets (maybe twice a week), established joint responsibility for its actions & whose discussions remain confidential to ensure full & frank communication of issues that need to be resolved by that committee;

now what might you call that, I wonder & why haven't we got one?
