You should try it out. Took me some time getting used to coming from solidworks, but FreeCAD got some really neat concepts.

Solidworks tends to get really messy and doesn't offer a lot of quality of live features, especially on complex and symmetrical parts. FreeCAD is there superior and easier to handel, though there are plenty rough edges and other features I miss.
For example it is a bit strange, that assemblys with mechanical/geometrical dependencies are only available through plug-ins (seem to work fine).

I would not change back freely.
