Price is definitely an issue but anywhere you go to play commander people are usually cool with proxies as long as they are legible.

I play Commander every weekend. As far as MTG goes its such a paradox.

It is the worst way to get started playing MTG while also being the most marketed towards newer players.

If you’re gonna get into it, I’d highly recommend low power like they are saying (everyone using unmodified precons) or playing a different format on something like MTG Arena first so you can get familiar with game rules and “The Stack”
