An Incredible Day In Internet History
It started with the Twitter lockout. 10,000 new users per hour. A QUARTER MILLION people migrated to Mastodon in one day. The servers struggled. Remarkably, admins all over the world built up capacity in real time. New users were patient. The system held.
It's running better now. There will be more hard days ahead, but people powered social media has arrived.
On my dog walk this morning, in glorious autumn sunlight, surrounded by trees & silence, the soundtrack in my head (not my ears, I don’t listen to stuff on a device when I walk) was Abdullah Ibrahim, remembering Tuesday’s glorious #LondonJazzFestival concert at the Barbican. He played solo piano without pause for 80mins or so, & it felt like just 20mins. #Jazz #AbdullahIbrahim
Did you know there was a Manchester Mastadon server @rickogden ?
The Surgeons' Hall Riot happened #OTD in 1870. The Edinburgh Seven arrived at Surgeons' Hall to sit their anatomy exam and were met by a crowd of male students and several hundred onlookers who opposed of women studying medicine. Not to be deterred the women went on to sit their exam.
After not being allowed to graduate at the time the group were posthumously awarded their medical degrees from Edinburgh University in 2019.

World Science Forum 2022 Media for Social Justice Fellowships
Support and promote science from the 'global south.'
One of WSF2022’s main objectives is to support the profession of science journalism in these quite difficult economic times. In the ‘global south’, where issues of importance to local, national and regional peoples are often a ‘hard sell’ at the global level and lack media coverage, the WSF2022 theme of “Science for Social Justice” strikes a definite chord.
Learn more about it here:

Thanks to @gmusser for pitching the idea! (Any problems with the implementation are entirely on me though 😉.)
A little #introduction for anyone who is new here - I’m Dr Dan O’Brien, historian of undertakers, funerals and death in eighteenth century England. I can often be found talking about early undertakers or researching their ephemera. I also enjoy sharing mourning jewellery, cemetery trips and other death-related items from history such as this delightful wooden skeleton. Hopefully you will join me for more interesting adventures in death history! #MementoMori #history #jewellery #cemetery
A vintage video of #Asbestos from years ago. Shocking the hazard people were exposed to.
Sadly many developing countries still expose workers to asbestos.
Russia, Brazil, Kazakhstan, and China all still mine asbestos and export it, to the tune of 1 million tons a year.

Really appreciating the warm welcome we received at our new home for the next few months in London. We’ll be here while I rehearse and perform my legacy project, the Broadway musical Allegiance. Hope you catch it starting on Jan if you’re here in town. https://allegiancemusical.com
