“Housing for cars is super-cheap and housing for people is super-expensive. At some point, when the delta between the space for cars and the space for people becomes so, so large, then people begin to think about living in cars.” — @asymco https://www.latimes.com/california/story/2023-11-26/cal-poly-humboldt-students-who-live-in-vehicles-are-ordered-off-campus
Pursuing a PhD should be a generative time, and for some it is. It is also generally an unhealthy experience on multiple levels, with weight gain and mental health issues being major challenges.
Self care, creating boundaries, having accountability partners for well being are critical to maintain physical and mental well being.
It is important to see, acknowledge, and work to self preserve in the face of some of the toxicity of academia.

I want to know about the "moderate risk" designation.
No job opening has deserved the question “Why is this position currently open?” as much as this one.
I speak about racism and Black people in the U.S. because it's what I know best, being an African American woman informed by my life experience here. The unsaid is that I'm also talking about all marginalized, oppressed groups at the same time, inclusive of everyone. There are parallels in our discrimination and treatment. And, we're all deserving of equal rights as human beings. It's never only about one group, it's about all groups, everyone.

Also just because you think it, doesn't mean it's true :)
Obesity pay gap: Well educated workers are penalized for their weight. But women have it worse. Obese men w/ bachelors degree earn 5% less than thinner colleagues; those w/ grad degree earn 14% less. Women's w/ bachelors earn 12% less; grad degree=19% less.

My fly-on-the-wall observations on AI and higher education (at least teaching and learning) is that most universities really do not know what to do. Many do not have integrated policies. Most professors don't really know what it is about.
Profs need training, procedural and pedagogical. Universities should be spearheading the response. However, that is not what I see.

For the first time in 20 years, the NBA began its season with no Black-owned franchises. In fact, there’s been only one Black majority-owned team in league history 🏀
A century ago, one of the top pre-NBA professional franchises began play in Harlem thanks to the efforts of a Black business owner named Bob Douglas.

If you want to talk about violence in the prison system, what we can do to reduce it, and how it is morally reprehensible for prosecutors to use that violence as a way to get Black people to confess to crimes that everyone knows that they did not commit? Then I'm with you. 👍🏿
But if you want to talk specifically about how we can keep Derek Chauvin safe? How we can keep the inhumane, brutal system for innocent Black folk, but protect him from it? Miss me with that. Talk to somebody else.
