With some of the things happening socio-politically assaulting women's rights, LGBTQIA people rights, POC rights, labor rights I am reminded of the hypocrisy of white progressivism and liberals...
That this group has massive economic power that could be wielded, but rarely is because it's inconvenient

I am pro labor- but I can't be bothered not to buy from Amazon and Starbucks

I am pro woman- but I can't be bothered not to shop at Walgreens and CVS

I am pro LGBTQIA- but those Chix Filet sandwiches are a bit too much to give up

If we can't do the little things, how will we do the big things?
This is also why small groups of highly organized radical and violent people can have so much sway.

Two good essays in Teen Vogue, which I confess is not a publication I ordinarily read: one in 2020 about teachers ditching grades (is.gd/T6HzcQ), the other reminding us that, despite the widely accepted "cancel culture" narrative, U.S. universities actually skew rightward in the ways that count (is.gd/sfzKsB)

“One of the most popular conceptual models in #Western #education was built on the wisdom and sophistication of a First Nations society, which was then made completely invisible in the literature. “

California’s community colleges do not employ enough full-time faculty and in some cases districts are misspending state funds allocated for those faculty instead on too many part-time adjuncts, finds state auditor.

@ZingerLearns I really don't know. I know historically segregation made for radical regional differences in politics and policies, but I don't know how to trace out the comparison. Though reading Adam Harris suggests that lots of what we are left with now comes from the white supremacy that was baked into the whole endeavor from the outset.

@ZingerLearns yes, completely true. And beyond the actual bans, there’s the effect of self censorship and a zeitgeist that communicates it’s OK to limit free inquiry, let alone suggest that certain people and lifestyles are “vaguely criminal.” Lots of organizing to do, particularly at the level of parents and school board elections.

The larger numbers, though, might suggest to state level politicians who see this as a winning strategy that they won’t derive the bump they’re hoping for.

You can draw a straight line from the Black Codes, which punished enslaved Black people who dared to read, educate themselves, and challenge the notion that they were inferior, to Desantis and the GOP's crusade to erase Black history, and prevent Black people from gaining access to educational and employment opportunities.

Recent polling data on book bans shows support from Republicans, not from Independents and Democrats. The headline may over play the data, but there’s some encouraging news.

On the Day of Hate, I was writing yet another paper disputing the ridiculous claims of a new generation of race scientists who are dragging out the "cold climate" theory of white supremacy, the superior intelligence of European and Asian ancestries, even the old cranial volume stuff, because genomics. What makes this new group of racist psychologists different is that it's not so much ideology -- it's a business model. They will get LOTS of funding from billionaire right wing orgs. #academicmastodon #scientific #psychology #anthropology

I and other educators are working to better understand and respond to the high levels of depression, anxiety, and suicide among the youth we work with, especially teen girls. How much is social media and the @#$% phone? The data are somewhat clear, the causes and responses are not. Listen to youth is important. wondering what others think?

Florida’s bill to “reform” #highed is right out of a fascist playbook. Attacks on education are attacks on democracy.

“House Bill 999 proposes leaving all faculty hiring to boards of trustees, allowing a faculty member’s tenure to be reviewed “at any time,” and removing majors or minors in subjects like critical race theory and gender studies. It would also prohibit spending on activities that promote diversity, equity and inclusion and create new general education requirements.”
