It is remarkable to me how the education system has conditioned educators, at least in the US to either not ask at all (and really rightfully demand) or consistently ask for too little when we do ask.

We need to look no further than classroom supplies, and how the system has helped internalize that teachers should spend their own money to provide basic things that in literally every other field and industry are provided, like pencils and pens.

We really need to make more concerted efforts about this and call out schools and policymakers. When schools are out of paper it should not be teachers' responsibility to buy some.

Good morning to readers. Kyiv remains in Ukrainian hands.

Some career news: I’m leaving NPR as part of the layoffs that dramatically reduced the company’s workforce.

I’ve decided to go back into Ukraine to keep reporting.

But this time, alone.

#HigherEd is burning in Connecticut. Under Gov. Lamont’s budget, the CSCU system may have to lay off 600-800 faculty and staff, close programs, cut courses, and increase class sizes. ctmirror.org/2023/04/25/rome-a

I learned today that 5 of my books are among the more than 1600 books banned in some schools right now.

Wow, the WashIngton Post treats Trump's vows to create a fascist federal government as just a routine political story. Here's the headline and deck:

"Trump touts authoritarian vision for second term: ‘I am your justice’

"The former president is proposing deploying the military domestically, purging the federal workforce and building futuristic cities from scratch."

This stuff is beyond authoritarian.

U.S. senators want five institutions to explain why they continue to hold thousands of #NativeAmerican remains and belongings, following reporting from ProPublica and NBC News.

“It’s immoral, it’s hypocritical, and it has to stop,” one senator said.

"Hundreds of institutions nationwide still hold a total of more than 100,000 ancestral remains, according to the news organizations’ analysis of federal data. None has more than UC Berkeley, with 9,000..."

There is literally no reason for this, Berkeley. None.

Let’s appreciate local journalism.

Too bad he wasn’t fired because he’ll still get health benefits and a pension which are more of the things Republicans always vote against anyway.

Now do so more, starting with Speaker Sexton.

No better business model than to try to get people to pay for something already freely available for no additional benefit other than being embarrassed by a blue check.

Why did some #Schools see more #COVID19 #Infections than others?🧵

Q: Are student infections related to socio-economic characteristics of school populations and/or their location?

A: Both. But area deprivation matters more.

My paper with Nathan Lau, Daniel Ansari, and Nisha Thampi answers these questions.

Hi guys, it’s me, your local angry ER doc!

Iowa GOP Senate passed a bill allowing 14 year olds to work night shifts. I have worked countless night shifts. I’ve worked 24 and 36 hour call, and I’ve had to go to lectures or meetings after many of these. I can tell you with certainty that kids who work night shift aren’t learning at school the day after. Night work also increases risk of cardiovascular disease and cancer, among other ill effects. Kids should never work nights. Ever.

While this study confirms yet again that active learning is superior, it also shows that college students may prefer being lectured at (and incorrectly believe it's more effective): is.gd/qte8aj.
One solution: discuss these findings (and the reasons for them) with students.
