This is ALWAYS the case when the goods being privatized consist of a monopoly on a product mandatory for life and/or health, such as water, power, medical care, drugs, food, shelter.

Water required by data centers is increasing considerably with the advent of generative AI. Large language models trained on vast amounts of data need considerable cooling.

While some may argue that water can be reused, it is often pulled from water supplies in times of considerable heatwaves, when residents are in need of it as well, and supplies diminsh faster.

In July of 2022, Microsoft pumped in about 11.5 million gallons of water to its cluster of Iowa data centers, according to the West Des Moines Water Works. That’s around 6% of all the water used in the district, which also supplies drinking water to residents.

Meanwhile, the energy required is of course not recycled – and it’s to be expected that energy use is growing as well. The companies behind the tools are just not disclosing how much their AI investments are costing when it comes to their carbon footprint.

”In its latest environmental report, Microsoft disclosed that its global water consumption spiked 34% from 2021 to 2022 (to nearly 1.7 billion gallons, or more than 2,500 Olympic-sized swimming pools), a sharp increase compared to previous years that outside researchers tie to its AI research.”

I’m really struggling with where I want to be socially in the post-Twitter eduverse.

Obviously any question asked directly on a platform will be biased toward people ON that platform, but still I want to know: where are you finding engaged teachers these days?

"There's something ironic about people in charge of education not knowing enough to critically determine which books are good or bad to include in curriculum, only to outsource the decision to a system that can't understand books and can't critically think at all," Dr. Margaret Mitchell, chief ethicist scientist at Hugging Face

I understand that most people don't really care about online #privacy, but since we're at the start of the school year, I'm going to give it a try and leave this here: #NoMoreSocialMediaPressureInSchools

@edutooters

I have been working with a group of science teacher educators and teachers on a food waste unit based on US school lunches...

I happened to walk by an elementary school while vacationing in Paris, I could not help myself but to take a picture of the weekly lunch menu and was struck by how different it is from what we get in the US. I don't think I have ever seen anything pointing out sources, if products were organic (never seen organic lunches in traditional public schools) etc...

Seems reflective of values?

"To this day, the cumulative per capita death rates from #COVID19 in countries that embraced the face coverings, such as Japan, South Korea and Singapore, are a sixth of Anglo-Saxon countries like the US and UK that balked at community masking."

Western Australia is hopelessly captured by the fossil fuel industry. They control a large chunk of the news media, and they (along with other mining interests) bankroll government. We have to find ways to combat our conversation into a petro-state.

Working on a public talk about climate change impacts in the United States and thought I would share one of my slides - always a striking comparison...

[Data from data.giss.nasa.gov/gistemp/. As usual, the rest of my slides will be available on my website by next week.]

please join me for a learning series webinar on classroom observation tools. i am looking forward to this conversation on 9/28... i always learn so much!

An FTC judge has ruled that TurboTax should stop advertising the product as free since they end up requiring about two thirds of tax filers to pay.

They can only advertise it as free too all customers, a majority of tax payers or the restrictions are clearly stated.

This particular scam has gone on for too long. Of course, the real scam is the government not just telling you how much you owe since they know what you make instead of making you do your own taxes.

But I think about the fearmongering and moral panic about "unqualified teachers" that was going on at the same time.

This Michelle Rhee cover is always the pinnacle for me

Anyway, I would love a history of teacher resistance to accountability and how their voices were drowned out by the moral panic.

Hello - just a very quick #Introduction (or reintroduction) as I figure out how to move instances. I gave up the bird last November in one of the migrations and haven't looked back since. I genuinely prefer this calmer, more nuanced, more enjoyable type of social media. I am a Secondary school English teacher in the UK. Keen to connect with #Education people, #Teachers #EduTooter and the like, but I also love #Food #Wine #Cheese #TaylorSwift and #WhiteTailedEagles

“AR Gov Sanders suggests course on Black history spreads ‘hate’ against U.S.”

I’ve said this before and I’ll say it again: Some white people were enslavers. Other white people were abolitionists. If you think teaching that accurate history “spreads hate”—then you’ll have to first explain why you associate more with enslavers than with abolitionists?🤔
