Is there a concept of communities, independent of instances?
Instances seem to coarse-grained.
Hash tags are kind of close, except there's no ability to moderate a hash tag.

@acjay There are some 'groups' but the concept doesn't seem especially popular (yet).
The idea is:
* you follow the group
* you send a message to the group by @-ing the group
* the group software boosts your post so ask followers of the group see it.
Moderation could be done by the owner of the group account blocking people/instances as usual, but I don't think that's done right now.
