Hello moon!
Leaving my Twitter homeworld to see what community I can find here.
PhD in Cognitive Science and Informatics (Complex Systems) from Indiana University, with research on History and Philosophy of Science and Information Foraging. Lately, I build ontologies in Sandia National Laboratories’ Machine Intelligence and Visualization Department.
More often than not, my posts are from adventures in #astrophotography and exploring the American Southwest from my home in New Mexico.
December 16, 1707, the last historic eruption of Mount Fuji in #Japan starts. Ash fallout was reported in Edo (modern Tokyo). The flank eruption triggered mudflows, damaging houses & burying agricultural land 🌋
16 December 1937 | A Dutch Jewish boy, Max Henri van Son, was born in Rotterdam.
He arrived at Auschwitz on 3 October 1942 in a transport of 1,014 Jews deported from Westerbork. He was murdered in a gas chamber after the selection.

First December in a few years without a new season of #TheExpanse to look forward to 😔 Sending love to all #expansegeeks #screamingfirehawks out there feeling this big emptiness.
December 16, 1902, a sequence of pyroclastic flows at La Pelée was documented by French geologist Alfred Lacroix. He will propose the first modern classification system of volcanic activity - one explosive type will be known as Pelean type 🌋
When I was trying out clay for art, I fell in love with della Robbia
Public Service Warning
Mastodon has a very big surge of new users right now. There's no way to tell if it will be sustained, but at this early point it looks similar to Nov 18 when when Musk pulled the employee purge.
It is very challenging for system administration to accommodate so many new users. If your server starts to struggle, it is not broken and will get sorted out.
We're all in this together. It's our social network. Be patient. What we are building is amazing.
Reposting given so many new folks are joining #Mastodon today:
Welcome! You’re going to like the #fediverse.
- Start with an #introduction about yourself & say hello 👋
- Share content you’re passionate about to meet others with similar interests. Hashtags will help you find them faster.
- With a few exceptions (just block them) this is a pretty friendly place.
- Be patient as instance hosts adjust to the #TwitterMigration.
I’m glad you’re here.

A collection of polished “lumps of #stone” found in a burial mound near Stonehenge more than 200 yrs ago are a 4,000-year-old #goldsmith’s #toolkit.
Microscopic reanalysis of the axes & shaped cobbles has revealed tiny traces of gold & wear marks, showing they were used by a skilled #BronzeAge craftsperson to hammer & smooth sheets of gold.

Every news outlet should stand up a Mastondon instance for their reporters & staff.
It’ll be great to see GivennameFamilyname@mastodon.famousnewspaper.com or whatever domain they want to use.
Built in verification. Every reporter for the Washington Post on a washpo domain. Every reporter for the New York Times on an NYTimes domain. Etc, etc.
Plus the “local” feed for each instance becomes a feed of all the posts from that institution mixed together — providing extra discovery.
A re- #introduction I guess… I’m a transplanted New Englander (#celtics, #redsox) living in the East Bay #sfba. I #hike, #run, #bake, still watch #TheSimpsons, play #ukulele, and make #geologicmaps (#geology, #geomorphology, #tectonics) mostly in the #Mojave desert. I also dabble in cosmogenic nuclide #geochronology to learn about the timing of #Pleistocene #glacier retreat and #landscapeevolution. Earth Science in the Public Service. Toots are my own and not endorsed by any organization.
Heeey so how’s everyone doing? Having a real one tonight?
*hands out blankets, popcorn, and beverages of choice*
For no particular reason I will also share this guide I wrote for #Twitter expats getting started on #Mastodon 👀

Remember folks, be kind to your neighbors, mods, and instance owners but no quarter for fascists.
May the servers be robust 🙏 🖖

Camp Ojo Caliente #NewMexico was established as an outpost of Fort Craig in 1859, and was quickly abandoned in 1861 at the beginning of the Civil War. It was reoccupied from 1879-1882 during the later Apache Wars. The first shots of Victorio's War were fired near here when a band of Apaches attacked the garrison and made off with their horses.
In the image, the camp is on the right and an older Pueblo is on the left.
The cats’ visits were not unpleasant. Well, except for Milo, better known as Murderball. A weighted blanket is one thing, Murderball laying upon you is another thing, but together they are like being pressed to death by some inquisition.
