Most of the major twitter replacement contenders are very white and American. We have what? tumblr, mastodon, reddit... why are these places so much less diverse than twitter, tiktok etc. ?

What are the hurdles and barriers?

@futurebird other than twitter I don’t think these apps are very social. I.E. I cannot see replies to this if I am not on your server. That’s a problem I believe.

@estuary Wait are replies to tweets of federated servers, from federated servers not visible unless you are on the same server... how am I seeing your reply then? (I must be misunderstanding what you are saying...) confused

@futurebird you can see my reply because I replied to your toot but I cannot see any replies here unless I’m mentioned. So in federated unless I reply I cannot see any comments if they are not on my server. That’s my understanding so far…

@estuary @futurebird is that actually true? I haven't noticed that but I haven't exactly looking for it either. It doesn't make a lot of sense that somebody would make a federated message exchange that doesn't handle nested messages. You will BBS systems used to do that, the late at night with I dial up lol

Why would they not add that feature? That seems like 101 and not particularly hard to code

@antiproton @futurebird for instance if I go to Astronomy picture of the day I only see about 3 comments. I know there are many than that.

@estuary @antiproton @futurebird
I'm on a different server from all three of you in this thread, yet I can see all the replies?

One week in, I'm still testing out how mastodon works though. Could you link to the Astronomy picture of the day account?
(which I like the sound of! I wanna follow that)

Follow

@Gurre @estuary @antiproton @futurebird

Still figuring out how this stuff works but I think this is it?

It says they have to approve my follow request, which is odd.

They also have an API.
