I don't really understand what discord is.

Is it an IM/voice companion for games? A interest specific message board? File sharing?

It can do everything and the interface is pretty much self explanatory. That's probably why it was successful

@yetAnotherRoko usually 1 and 2. Some communities use it to make servers centered around some topics or games, so you can have text and voice chat in a single place.

My friend group has a server, but we mainly use it to voice chat and to send links/images while playing something.
