Looking for a good discussion with other faculty/group leaders:

Who have been your most important mentors to help you think about this stage of your career scientifically?
What was the perspective or advice they brought that changed things or opened your eyes to something you'd been missing before?

@allysonsgro this is such a good question. I think the advice that sticks with me has been more pragmatic than scientific though — does that count?

@allysonsgro one of my mentors has an exceptional track records of "placing" people. I asked them for advice on how to screen applicants and they said "no projects." Then they explained that if you could identify what was wrong -- even if you were sure you could fix it -- it wasn't likely to work out. I still think about that.

@schoppik @allysonsgro just to clarify - did they mean the applicant had no projects/publications?
