Is Mastadon always this slow, or have #twitterrefugees like myself gummed up the joint?

Depends on your instance or server. If you use a very large server, such as mastodon.social, it sometimes can feel slow if there are a lot users. If you have account on a relatively small server, you can still follow everyone and the speed may feel faster.
@arinbasu @briannawu This is what I've been telling people on the bird site for the past couple of days. Pick a smaller server and your experience will be better.
