(please booooost!)

🗓 This SUNDAY November 13th at 11am ET we're presenting our workshop "Alternative Social Media for Anarchists - An Anarchist Introduction to the Fediverse"

The workshop is ONLINE on zoom, as part of the Boston Anarchist Bookfair: bostonanarchistbookfair.org/20

🤓 First we will explain what the Fediverse is, how it works, and why anarchists should embrace it. :anarchism:

Then we will invite participants to register for an account at an instance and do a guided walkthrough/tutorial of how to use Mastodon! 🐘🤔

Please BOOST! 🗣 and share far and wide both on and off Fedi. This will be a great way for new or curious users to understand the Fediverse and how to get started on here! It will be a very nice and safe hand holding workshop! If you just got here and are lost and confused, come! And bring a friend who is curious!

✅ You need to register in advance with the bookfair to get a link to the zoom on Sunday. Registration link: us06web.zoom.us/meeting/regist

👉 (please do not reply complaining about how the workshop is on zoom! The Boston Anarchist Bookfair is the host, and so we are beholden to their choice of platform. They are running their bookfair as they see fit to reach and accommodate their audience. We already know why zoom is evil. Don't bother @ ing us to tell us. We will happily give the workshop again on Jitsi or another platform if another org would like to host and promote it, so just get in touch!)

Finding people to follow and be followed by:

communitywiki.org/trunk
*Trunk* is a great resource to find people classified by disciplines and countries to follow. You can also add yourself to the **Trunk** list and get others to follow you.

Another way to do so is to copy paste the 'invite' link on your profile page and share it with people on other social network sites, such as :birdsite:, ahem ...

We never did a proper #introduction, did we? 😲

- Write an post
- Find and follow people

Onboarding notes part 2 ;tldr to skip if you know how to

@pbhakat

* When you start out, create a profile with a picture and a description about you.
* On Mastodon you can also indicate four other sites of interest like your blog, or other social media sites in the preference pane. In other apps such you can fill in additional textboxes
* Write an about yourself so people would know you. Many people refuse to 'follow' if they do not see an introduction. This is important for 'humans' as bots are OK in
* Follow hashtag to learn more ...

Welcome to the . Post whatever you like just as you would do in the old way. If you want to tag anyone to put an @ sign before the name. If you want to write about a topic add a hash (#) before the topic.

Follow and like people freely, as many posts as you like. Engage with people here.

All you basically need is one instance address to get started. You can follow anyone and post to your own instance that will on the fediverse network. In that sense it is similar to email or web page, this is the magic of

There is more to fediverse than . Your one address let's you access Instagram like image posts on an app named (tip: try searching it), YouTube like , Facebook like threaded discussion . You can push and pull from anywhere into your instance.

You can "dm' people but DMs are not like twitter, can be viewed by your instance owner. You cannot quote tweet, if you reply and write a note, that serves the purpose of retweet.

You can add media in by selecting files after clicking the paperclip icon. Use 'cw' liberally, think of it as a header for your post or 'caurion'. When you post images always add an 'alt' so that people with limited vision can be included.

The keyword here is and .

Look forward to read your posts.

Some instances have some extra features added. For example, the one I'm on has a 65k post size among others. So, unless your instance runs default Mastodon (and that's fine too), it's best to check their about page to see what the modifications are. And rules, of course. And what kind of community they focus on (which is useful for your local timeline).

@eprenen @aral Yes, that's the sad reality. Convincing someone to sign up on a server hosted by someone else (especially a recognizable non-profit) is much easier than convincing them to get into self-hosting. Many people are neither capable nor willing (although SaaS offerings help, any hosting cost is a hurdle not to be discounted). We need scalable servers for the masses. Luckily the system supports both use cases.

@arinbasu @briannawu This is what I've been telling people on the bird site for the past couple of days. Pick a smaller server and your experience will be better.

If you see this toot (yeah this one right here), can you boost it for me? It will help my new server federate with the wider Mastodon network. 🚀 🙏

I spoke to someone from a very large US gov org over the weekend and they are looking into standing up a #Mastodon instance. Would be unusual to see them move so quickly but there are several good reasons to do so. No idea if it will happen but at least its on the radar. Interesting times.

As my first toot on Sciences.Social, I'm excited to share our lab's new PNAS paper--just out today--showing that wealth redistribution promotes happiness. This #MysteryExperiment began when a wealthy couple partnered with
TED to give away $2 million. 300 participants from 7 countries (Kenya, Indonesia, Brazil, Canada, US, UK, & Australia) joined the experiment without knowing what it was about. Then, 200 of them, chosen at random, received $10,000 each...pnas.org/doi/10.1073/pnas.2211

For academics it is going to be important to search for DOI's on this platform. This means we will need to be able to put a hashtag in front of a DOI. As identified by richvn@mastodon.social @mike and @rmounce this is currently not possible. Indicate your support for this new feature request on the Mastodon github page: github.com/mastodon/mastodon/i and boost to reach a wider audience.
