Understanding #Mastodon gets easier once you get the basic idea that federation between servers can be understood as homeomorphisms across hyperplanes between the Riemannian manifolds of toots, whereas the servers represent countable finite sets of discrete entities.

As someone who lived through the "eternal september" when AOL opened the doors to usenet, I'm seeing some of the same dynamics play out here of the folks who were here getting angry at all the new entrants, mainly for breaking norms or criticizing decisions that felt settled.

My one recommendation: recognize that new people also have things to add and different perspectives can be useful.

Norms change. It's good to explain why decisions were made, but not to scold.

Hey all, giving this a try! I'm a recently minted cognitive psychology PhD looking to get into data science. My academic interests are broad, but most prominently include categorization, recognition, and formal modelling of mental processes. I learn languages for fun, and probably play too much D&D in my spare time. Don't be a stranger!
