The more I see Rust spread, but more I think thereโ€™s room for an alternate computing vision, one that doesnโ€™t give up on managing complexity, that improves security and safety, but also supports hackability by the non-professionals.

Linux/Rust vs. Hurd/Guile?

Do you know how to make yoghurt? The first step is to add yoghurt to milk! How can you build a compiler like #GCC ? The first step is to get a compiler that can compile the compiler.

Compilers are often written in the language they are compiling. This creates a chicken-and-egg problem that leads users and distributors to rely on opaque, pre-built binaries of those compilers that they use to build newer versions of the compiler.

To gain trust in our computing platforms, we need to be able to tell how each part was produced from source. We believe that opaque binaries are a threat to user security and user freedom since they are not auditable; our goal is to minimize the amount of bootstrap binaries.

One of the most funny and ironic revelations I have had recently is that the Tolerant and Civilised West under the guise of fighting "hate speech" all but re-invented blasphemy laws. I see virtually no difference between people being prosecuted for saying words against Allah in Pakistan and for saying whatever it is illegal today in Britain.

No, it hasn't fallen. It seems to have always been this way.

thread where both sides come up with increasingly complicated legalese constructs to save themselves from admitting laws are bullshit and if a state wants to destroy your life it will destroy your life. without any repercussions.

Anyone have connections in companies that treat their software engineers right that are either remote friendly or have offices in San Diego?

I got laid off at the start of the year, and even with a resume written by a pro I've gotten a horrible response rate. The only companies I've even gotten so much as a phone screen from are ones where they contacted me first.

Reading a tutorial on how to set timers in systemd. The first example, under the heading "Creating a Simple Timer", starts with:

> sudo $EDITOR /usr/local/bin/my-timer.sh

Ummm, no. If I have to elevate to root, it's not a "simple" task. It's an administrative one. Where's my drop-in replacement for `crontab -e` ???

People casually throwing around sudo in tutorials is one reason computer security is in such a shitty state.

not saying that the bankers health shouldn't be taken into account btw. it's pretty weird that the prosecutor did want to close the case as well though.

the real scandal is that an old woman is put through a trial and her complaints about health are more or less ignored because she was _saying something wrong_.

people like this judge are becoming the very thing they say they are fighting against.
