explorations: I found the most recent ants9front iso available, at https://ftp.cc.uoc.gr/mirrors/9ants/ (9ants5.64.iso) and decided to give it a test-drive. Installation was a breeze and having access to venti/fossil was a welcome sight during the installation. I also found a discussion started by mycroftiv himself, https://9fans.topicbox.com/groups/9fans/Ta5071137bc09d294-M34f4c8d6b760d986a6fe1a53 , which gives a subjective but valuable history of the reasons for 9front and the things that changed since that fork. I really like reading mycroftiv’s writings, there’s a good person in there who just wants to have fun with his computerator.

The install went great, but things like sysupdate are still using mercurial, and using the deprecated mercurial repositories at https://code.9front.org/hg/plan9front – and if these were both git repos I’d be perfectly cozy just changing the scripts to use a different origin, it’s moving from hg to git which is a bigger step I think. gridstart and the rest of the gridchat stuff doesn’t work out of the box anymore with 9gridchan.org having fallen to the scalpers after mycroftiv’s frustration with “chan culture”. So it updates, but the last time the hg repo had been updated was more than a year ago. Nonetheless, grio and hub work a charm; for reasons beyond me at the moment the rio-themes.patch doesn’t seem to want to work anymore, as it looks for files that seemingly don’t exist? So I’m just riding the soothing teals and black-on-white at the moment. It really is a shame that 9front didn’t run with the 9ants stuff after mycroftiv; he basically giftwrapped for them a means to bring if not agreement, options to the non-owned plan9 forks. But that last bit is just my opinion so far.

I’m not quite sure where to start on transitioning the entire filesystem from hg-sourced to git-sourced, but if I can do that then I have 9front 64-bit with ANTS and the ability to update to the most recent changes, barring any unforeseen branch conflicts.

But that’s for later. Need a little break.
