I came across one of the first blog posts by the React team, "Why did we build React?", and it's fascinating because it never even tries to answer it's own question, but implies that ie8 has quite a lot to do with it.

More hot takes: everyone wants to tell me how much fun it is to write react, but nobody will argue (rightly) that redux is fun, and you can't really have one without the other, so maybe I shouldn't pick my tools based on fun after all.
My current probably-obvious-and-unoriginal hot take developed while talking to @slightlylate: the most successful tools for making websites extend core browser technology instead of replacing it. It's a Yes And approach.
