The ultimate source of the smell of rain is a population of soil bacteria known as actinobacteria. When the air becomes humid just as rainfall begins, those microbes get busy & produce aromatic geosmin as a byproduct.

Going in to work today. Even though working a day off is always a bit of a bore, it never feels the same as a normal work day. I think it's because it's voluntary. Reminds me of all those decades ago when I moved from school to college and my results improved massively... as my Mum said to my old form teacher, "that's the difference between her being there because she had to, and because she chose to". Bright woman, my Mum.
