I actually learned some video codec stuff from/because of anime communities :)
There's also people like Dark Shakari (x264 lead dev, anime fan IIRC) with articles like https://web.archive.org/web/20141124052059/http://x264dev.multimedia.cx/archives/102, so I guess there's quite some good stuff resulting from the obsession over quality :P
