I spent the last 6 months upgrading dependencies on a project where that was ignored for years. Went from 247 outdated gems to just 14.
Trying something new. Wrote a GitHub Action that fails (prevents merge) when the number of outdated gems exceeds some threshold (20).
Reminds me a little of what @lisamelton & @kocienda did with Safari: Can't merge a feature if it hurts performance. Lesson: Automate checks on the things you value.
How do you ensure your dependencies are kept up to date?
I just really want to thank everyone again who answered or boosted or liked my post the other day; Mastodon is a much better place than I was giving it credit for, and I'm happy to be here and to be in such great company. All y'all who gave advice on how to find my people were so generous with your time and knowledge, it really reminded me that not everywhere on the Internet is a cesspool. Thanks for being you! And I have no idea how to tag this, lol. #thankyou #newfriends #learning
This makes me sick. The religious right is doing everything it can to deprive children and adolescents the opportunity to learn and think. They need to be able to indoctrinate more young people into their Christofascist army and they can’t do that if they have the freedom to read https://bookriot.com/hoopla-overdrive-libby-now-banned-for-those-under-18-in-mississippi/
"Piracy can't be stealing if paying for it isn't owning"
This is increasingly how it feels, when streaming shows disappear for tax reasons and things you "own" digitally become inaccessible.
Thank you @Illuminatus for this quote.
There’s been a lot of speculation around what Threads will be and what it means for Mastodon. We’ve put together some of the most common questions and our responses based on what was launched today:

To build the border wall, the Trump admin waived dozens of environmental laws. The Biden administration has just rescinded the waivers. Great news for the border region!
Hubby was out of town on Friday, so on Saturday Inkwell the Cat had to rely on me to feed him.
He patiently waited until about 6 am, then set a paw on my cheek, next to my mouth, for a moment. It woke me up, but not completely.
He then set his paw back down, but this time the deathblades were out. I felt tiny prickles of sharp cat claws on my face and lips.
The first tap was to wake me. The second was to get me out of bed.
It worked.
