ADHD life

is hiding the only meaningful jewelry you’ve got in a “safe place” because contractors are going to be coming in and out of the house and then one week later not being able to find them and getting upset and then spending an entire YEAR fighting the upset because you know you put them *somewhere* and then one day randomly finding them in a desk drawer you’ve searched like 30 times since then. Every day brings a new little gift - set up by your previous self long, long ago. Today it was my grandmother’s pearls.

Dear god there are so many interesting things in the world. Signed up for this one in 10 seconds flat. clockworksacademy.com/courses/

#Threethings for Sat Nov 12:
1. Astounding image from the #Mars Curiosity rover, via Kevin Gill who is Kevinmgill on the other place. It looks like a landscape one would have fun exploring.
2. Speaking of Mars, it was glorious last night with the #Moon close by in Taurus Did anyone else spot them?
3. Had a amazing, moving, raucous time with #bellowhead in #Oxford last night. Best live band anywhere? Possibly. #Folk refracted through all sorts of lenses. Go if you can. #astrodon

Happy to share my most recent paper about course modifications to support student mental health in the physics classroom. I never feel like I do enough, and my collaborators and I wrote this as a reminder that even modest changes are valuable! #ITeachPhysics #MentalHealth

Here’s my favourite photo of the Australian night sky. The #Australian #indigenous peoples identified the “constellation” of “The Emu” - an outline formed not of stars but from the dark clouds of dust that obscure the Milky Way. You can clearly see the image of the emu in this one, with the head at the top right. This was taken in 2020 from Ebor Falls in New England, NSW #nightscapes #photography #astronomy

This is a tiny piece of limestone but still an absolute favourite - a wee Loxonema gastropod sat on top of a bryozoan that is lying on a crinoid ossicle, which is on top of a brachiopod fragment! Rocks are awesome. 330 million years old from Fife, Scotland 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

Waves refracting around a small sand bar in San Francisco Bay.

Before the sun set, pied-billed? grebes were fishing the interference zones behind the sand bars. The constructive interference must shake small fish and shrimp off the sand.

Wow. This needs to be read by everyone who joined Mastodon in the last week: hughrundle.net/home-invasion/

US Politics

I grew up in rural Pennsylvania and my entire family is still there (and most are still trump republicans :ablobhologram:). I have little faith in electoral politics but thank god won the PA senate seat. Every once in a while, PA does something right, almost in spite of itself.

I have never seen such a concentration of kind, interesting people, cool things to learn about, and dopamine supply in my life. Y'all are fabulous.

Saw this in a nearby post office and it reminded me of all the poor Mastodon admins this week ...

When an exoplanet passes between its host star and us, the star's light is filtered by the exoplanet's atmosphere, each molecule leaving a different imprint.

Similarly, during a lunar #eclipse like the one on Nov 7-8, sunlight passes through the Earth's atmosphere before reaching the Moon. We can thus use lunar eclipses to find clues of life on Earth, which will hopefully help us identify life elsewhere. I wrote about it here:

Kill your inner capitalist.

I (and a host of other science and non-science folks) am going to be in the new Cosmic Shambles Network documentary, “Rapid Motion Through Space: An Incomplete History of Speed”, which is released next year. Check out the trailer here! 🤓 youtu.be/6HPhhbDjZyQ

Reminder about lunar eclipse tonight, visible from the US, Oceania and Eastern Asia. The show starts at about 1am Mountain Time, see link when that is in your time zone. everytimezone.com/s/2da3be5c

Here’s my series of photos from the previous eclipse back in May.
