The thing about Twitter is that it really lacks a lot of the features you'd expect from a true Mastodon replacement.
For example, there's no way to edit your toots (which they, confusingly call "tweets"—let's face it, it's a bit of a silly name that's difficult to take seriously).
"Tweets" can't be covered by a content warning. There's no way to let the poster know you like their tweet without also sharing it, and no bookmark feature.
There's no way to set up your own instance, and you're basically stuck on a single instance of Twitter. That means there's no community moderators you can reach out to to quickly resolve issues. Also, you can't de-federate instances with a lot of problematic content.
It also doesn't Integrate with other fediverse platforms, and I couldn't find the option to turn the ads off.
Really, Twitter has made a good start, but it will need to add a lot of additional features before it gets to the point where it becomes a true Mastodon replacement for most users.

Wow. This needs to be read by everyone who joined Mastodon in the last week: https://www.hughrundle.net/home-invasion/
France will soon enforce a law that requires every car park with 80+ parking spaces to have solar panels installed.
This could produce up to 11GW of clean energy, or the equivalent of the power produced by ten nuclear reactors.

I am a climate scientist with interests in better understanding historical changes in climate and extreme weather. Also think about future climate-related risks, among other topics: http://www.edhawkins.org
One key approach in this research is using citizen science to recover millions of lost weather observations, such as: http://www.WeatherRescue.org
I dabble in climate dataviz too, including the Climate Stripes: http://www.ShowYourStripes.info
Tip: The Tusky app is superb for using Mastodon if like me you use android phone. Boost away so othes can see tip too. 😊👌 #Newbie #tips #introduction #IrishMastadon #Mastodon
I keep hearing that #Mastodon is not likely to replace #Twitter. To that I say: so what?
I've been contributing to the #Linux desktop for the last 15 years not because it's likely to replace #Windows, but because providing people with free desktop is the right thing to do.
I use and support Mastodon not because it's likely to replace Twitter, but because it's a social network done right.
@erzsebel Pete does a very good David Bowie.
The smaller scale of Mastodon is interesting
It puts me in mind of a 2010 column I wrote for Wired about "the virtue of obscurity": https://www.wired.com/2010/01/st-thompson-obscurity/
Back then, Twitter was still new. A "big" followership was like 4,000 people. A huuuuuge celebrity like Oprah had 1.5 million
I kept hearing from people in the middle of the pack, who slipped from "a few hundred mostly friends" to "10,000 strangers/randos"
They didn't always like it

@Susancatley Hi! Welcome to the cool kids' instance.
Ok, Mastadon is officially a lot more awesome than I had realised. There's a federated server for everyone who's really into bitcoin, and, yes, it is full of people who are as awful as you can imagine. But, with one click, you can block the entire domain! 12.8k thousand crypto weirdos filtered out in a click. Amazing.
Hi, my name is Mike Agg. I joined Twitter as 'gammidgy' in 2010, as a way to promote the monthly sci-comm event I was running back then in a pub in Reading.
My personal experience of Twitter was great, but if we only care about our own experiences then I think we are failing as social beings. I don't want to be part of a network that thinks bullying must be tolerated as the price of free speech, or that accessibility is unimportant.
I'm skeptical that good content moderation is even possible on a global platform, and I'm interested to see if Mastodon's federated model works better.
