If your cat scratches just the ends of his or her cardbaord scratcher, once you've used both sides -
Take the insert out,
Cut the insert in half,
Now rotate the two pieces and put them back in so the clawed up ends are now the middle!
You get a little more time before having to buy or make more cardboard inserts.

You may need to offer reassurance. Loki watched in horror as I cut his favorite thing in half! He stopped crying when I returned it reassembled Poor guy.

@hellomiakoda And if your cat just sits on the cardboard scratcher, and scratches the carpet instead?

@crosswordman When my cat scratches things he shouldn't, I take him to his scratcher and rub his paws on it in a scratching type motion.
This seems to reduce how often he scratches furniture and carpets. He now only seems to do it if he's mad at me, or if I've neglected to replenish the cardboard. When he's mad, he will lock eyes with me as he drags his claws down the furniture. It's a clear display of "fuck you, human!"
