“Now, however,” He told them, “the one with a purse should take it, and likewise a bag; and the one without a sword should sell his cloak and buy one. Part of the reason was to underline, "I lay down my life of my own accord. No man takes it from me." Also, swords were forbidden for slaves - carrying swords showed them to be free men.
