Following the removal of Gab's ASN from RIPE whois database, I decided to write up a little blog post about free speech - something that USED to be uncontroversial (before many of you were born)...

Also how (in my opinion) websites should be protecting themselves. Kiwifarms is doing it more or less right, Gab, less so...

@cjd Wait ... Amazon cancels their cloud service, so Gab rebuilds with their own servers. ISPs cancel them, so they get their own ASN. And now their ASN is deregistered?

I always look for "poor man's" small scale solutions. I think replacing CDN with mesh net (e.g. cjdns) connections between cloud vps with reverse proxy and actual servers. Yes, cjdns is not anonymous, but it's a layer of obfuscation.

I wrote how I would do it in the blog post.

1. Don't use Amazon, and if you do, don't let anyone KNOW you're using Amazon...
2. If you're gonna move to an ISP, request that they update the whois for your server's IP address to YOUR business name - this means abuse mail goes to you rather than them - that makes a MASSIVE difference...
3. If you really want to go all-out and register your own ASN (you don't need to go that far FTR), try to not do it in a different jurisdiction than your company...

@cjd I thought whois was a DNS thing. I didn't know IP addresses (IP4? IP6? PTR RRs?) had whois records.

Yup, not PTR records AFAIK, but IPv4/IPv6 address blocks, AS#s, contact person ID all have whois records in various whois databases...
