#MastodonTips for #birdsite people

I’ve seen a few of these doing the rounds, but here are some tips that I found useful when starting out:

1. Use #hashtags liberally – there is no plain text search

2. Follow and ‘boost’ a lot (unlike Twitter—known here as ‘the birdsite’—favouriting doesn’t affect what others see)

3. Use CW ‘wrappers’ for anything likely to cause offence, including politics, talk about the birdsite, and pictures of spiders 😱

4. Use the local and federated timelines to see what’s going on in your Mastodon neighbourhood (note: not available via the ‘official’ mobile app!)

5. You can set a toot to ‘Mentioned people only’ to DM people (though like Twitter, messages are not encrypted)

6. In Mastodon 4.0 and above you can follow hashtags

7. You normally only need to use the @username format to mention people you follow, but when searching for people across the #Fediverse use @username@servername.

8. Use fediverse.glitch.me or pruvisto.org/debirdify/ to reconnect with others you follow, or who follow you, on Twitter.

9. Add your mastodon handle to your Twitter bio, and #fedi22 to your Mastodon bio, so that others can do the same.

10. There’s an edit function 🎉

Happy tooting! 😊

@keithwilson Thanks Keith! I have absolutely no idea how this works, so these tips are a great help 😅

@danieljamesyon Glad it helped! It took me a few days to find my bearings, but after that it’s like a cool glass of water compared to the hellsite. 😅
