Even though technically free, consider annual costs of a dog is $1500-2000.
Anyway. Just spread the word there’s alternatives to the rescues where there’s an long application process and larger adoption fee. (All for good reason!). I’ve been a foster for years for Secondhand Hounds and they do great work.
Meet Pogo!
Additionally, TIL you can sign up as a volunteer with MACC and just take a dog for a run or even foster for just a weekend!
I love the flexibility.
Hey #minneapolis #StPaul #Twincities friends… we saw this report in axios newsletter yesterday. We’ve been thinking about getting a second dog for a little while now. Quite spontaneously, my husband went over to the MACC shelter “just to look” and brought home a dog.
If your house is open to it, consider fostering or adopting from the shelter.
Adoption fee is waived for mpls ppl

Three Oregon universities didn't renew their #Elsevier subscriptions at the end of 2022. Alicia Salaz: "In the long term…students, researchers & scholars everywhere will benefit from a system that doesn't exploit academic labor for excessive profit."

The coolest fossils (imho) are the ones that show behavior. This truly astonishing example from the Late Jurassic captured the entangled aftermath of a predation attempt, when a gar-like fish (Aspidorhynchus) went after a pterosaur (Rhamphorhynchus). Judging by the pose, Asipidorynchus' rostrum teeth likely tangled in the pterosaur's wing membrane. At least the pterosaur didn't die on an empty stomach—UV light revealed fish in its belly.

@bryanhansel I met here in Alexandria, VA years ago and have a couple of her books. Earlier stuff is quite different than some newer work.
@daphsci it's an interesting question. I'd like to hear it.
In this case, I enjoy the absurdity of one AI generating input for another and the the output being made by a human. It's usually humans making robots make stuff. I'm dreaming how this could become a art gallery show. During the opening, I could use Microsoft's voice simulator to read an artist statement and give a talk about the project in my voice reading copy from ChatGPT made in the style of my writing.
The absurdity is so fun.
@ProPublica has created a database of museums and universities that are still holding remains of #Indigenous Americans in their collections, in violation of NAGPRA (the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act of 1990). #MinnesotaHistoricalSociety and #UofMN #Duluth have some work to do. #MN #Minnesota
@davidho same.
I choose a less direct route to #bike to work because it’s where I think I’m least likely to be killed by a motor vehicle and that’s a failure in policy and city planning.

Finland has closely watched the Russian troll factory's efforts to create chaos in free democracies. We now educate our children to recognize #misinformation and rank #1 in our ability to resist it.
I wish the Americans would do the same.
Thanks to everyone who spoke out against sexual harassment in the past few years there are now new rules about how to NOT DESTROY your lab and trainees.

Memo to @nationalreview:
1. The NOTAM system is separate from air traffic control.
2. The NOTAM system is *already* privatized. It's run by Leidos.
3. A significant portion of air traffic control is not run by the FAA. I talk to non-FAA flight controllers from the airplane every week.
Suggestion: Learn about a topic before shitposting about it.
