I often post photos from bike rides around Detroit. This piece by Bridge Detroit about a neighborhood in the middle of the city is a very well reported story that describes quite clearly one instance of how so many of these neighborhoods end up so devastated: industry buys up lots, neglects them, buys more for cheaper, then starts operating a concrete plant that craters the values of the homes and poisons the residents who don't want to or can't move away
